Earthquake Response
There is a great need for food and relief in Myanmar. Before the recent earthquake, there were already 3.5 million internally displaced people due to the war and other natural disasters. Now, those numbers are increasing and the need for food and medical supplies is urgent.
Here is a message from Dr Mitch Ryan, Program Director of our local partner Earth Mission. “I do find it a bit ironic. The dictator has bombed and burned over 100,000 houses and displaced over 3 million people from their homes with airstrikes and artillery attacks. He continues to bomb civilians even after the earthquake—and even after asking for aid for the very places he’s bombing. And the world’s media hardly says a peep about that. How can one offer humanitarian relief while ignoring issues of justice? The dilemma of providing relief for the earthquake in Burma while not supporting the military—who is harming its people far more than the earthquake ever did—is a poignant reminder: if we are truly concerned for the people, we must address both humanitarian needs and justice, for the good of those who are suffering”
Our local partner Earth Mission are expecting an increase in the demand for their services as people leave the cities and move to rural areas. Any donations received in response to the earthquake will be used for food, rice and medical care. Thank you for giving!
