Naw Kyi La, 25 years old, was visiting the clinic every month for pregnancy care and she also had other concerns we needed to treat and watch. So the clinic called her for follow up every month. On March 16, her father came to the clinic and asked the staff to come to their home because she was having a long labour. So Kaw Tha Blay (Year 3 PA student), Naw Zu Zae Nar (Year 4 PA student) and one of KDHW medics started preparing everything they needed for a home birth in the village.
"On the road, we talked about what to do and planned that one would take vital signs and one would talk to the family. When we arrived, the pregnant woman was in pain so I checked her. When I asked about her labour, she said her labour pains started 2 days before, and she was in pain the whole night. That day at 5AM her fluid broke, but the baby was not coming out, so they got worried. She had regular vital signs, but when she had a contraction her blood pressure went up a little.
At 10AM, she had more contractions and the baby was slowly coming, so I told her when she had another contraction, just push a little. At 10:30 Baby's head came out but it was turning blue, and the neck had the umbilical cord wrapped around it 2 times. We got the baby out, but when she was outside, she was not crying. She did have a heartbeat, so I sucked her mouth with a suction ball and rubbed the baby. After about one minute, the baby turned a little red and started moving, so I put a mask on her face and told one of the KDHW staff to squeeze the ambu bag giving her oxygen. After many minutes the baby started crying so I put the baby blanket on the baby and gave her to mommy. She was sucking a little and when I checked her mother's vital signs, they were good, so I waited one hour to see her condition, and everything was ok. She was happy, so I told her if she had any problem, come to the clinic or call us. Baby weight-3.5kg." - Zu Zae Nar
